This Burnt. Toaster advertisement is a project that I have done for my History of Design class.
For this project I wanted to mimic the Volts Wagon Beetle ads from 1959 (some examples of which are show above). The other portion of this project, the subject, I got the idea while talking to some friends, and how toasters are going to take over the world. That being said I was then inspired to do my project on a toaster. As shown above are a couple of my references, and some of the research I did to find the toasters and ad style that I was after.
I did however explore other ideas, but this one seemed like it would be a lot of fun to try and replicate.
Most of the Volts Wagon Beetle ads from 1959 were generally commenting negatively on the car and how sometimes it didn't work or something else was off about the car. So How could I do something similar with a toaster? Well, burnt waffles! So burnt that the squares have smoothed down and the waffles have become hockey pucks.
Finally, we come to what I rendered out of Blender. A colored variant of the toaster on its side with the poor little waffles resting in the white void, cooked beyond what would be necessary. Then the only task was to choose a font and to make the image black and white with some minor touch ups in Photoshop. After scrolling through the provided fonts in Photoshop, I found one that, to me, resembled the font used on the original advertisements. Thus, we have Burnt.
